Your Ability To Discriminate

(and how it helps you get your goals)

If you had a piano that only had 3 keys you would have a very limited ability to play a wide variety of music. Your brain works the same way; if you can only create 3 feelings, or can only use 3 types of motivation, or only know how to manipulate 3 visual submodalities, you are never going to be able to create the internal riot that is so important to living a satisfied and thrilling life, one in which your gym routines and your exercise is a vital and important part, after all, we are only animals, underneath the covering of civilisation, and animals need to be exercised. When dogs are not walked by their owners, they get fat and lazy, when humans don't exercise themselves, the same thing happens.

So now imagine you have a piano with a hundred keys, all of a sudden the amount and variety of music you can play grows exponentially. Your brain and body work in the same way. Part of what you are doing with this programme is adding more keys. By playing around with the submodalities and changing them to create new ways of feeling about the same criteria, you are adding more keys to your piano.

You can take it further though, much further. Now, if we add three pedals that change the effect of each of the piano keys, we grow exponentially again. By building in more modalities to your leading or dominant representation system you add pedals to your nervous system.

Finally, what would happen if you were to add an amplifier and loudspeaker setup to your piano? It would get louder and capable of reaching greater distances.

How does this relate to the gym, weight loss, fitness, exercise and training?

Let's take a few questions that may highlight the importance of being able to discriminate and make a good decision (which is based upon that discrimination):

How do you know when to eat?How do you know when to stop?How do you know what to eat?How do you know it's time for a new training program?How do you know when you need to lose more weight?How do you know when your body's had enough?

You probably see now, that the more finely, the more accurately, the more securely you can answer each of those questions, the easier you will find it to get what you want from each of those areas.

So, if we continue this line of thought, it makes good sense to determine to improve . I have found this to be especially important with helping people with weight loss and fat loss, as I find that the majority of overweight individuals have 'trained' themselves out of being able to notice what's going on with their body. To a certain extent you have to if you are going to over eat, and ignore the signals that your body sends you that lets you know you've had enough, or the wrong thing, or don't actually need what you're going to eat.

What I've also found is that once they tune into this discrimination ability, and train it, they find it easier and easier to lose weight, because they are working with their body, not against it.

Why Is It So Hard To Stay Motivated With Exercising? Are You Making These 3 HUGE Mistakes?

You already know by now that exercising is vital if you want to lose weight, burn fat, and enhance your overall health. But are you one of the MANY folks who is finding it hard to stay motivated with exercising? If so, then in this article today I have for you 3 HUGE and very common mistakes that 9 times out of 10 will make just about anyone lose motivation with exercising. 1.) You're not getting proper nutrition...

My friend, proper nutrition is where it's at. It doesn't matter what you do, if what and how you eat are improper, then the results are not going to come. Eating right in regards to exercising is super important, and here's why...

This works two ways: For one, eating the right foods will give you energy during your workouts and help your muscles recover after your workout. And second, you will never see significant results from exercising if you aren't eating correctly. This is because all the important nutrients are needed in your body to help with burning off body fat and so much more. Imagine that: You're busting your butt exercising, and then it all goes to waste because of improper dieting!

2.) You're doing workouts greater than you current fitness level...

This is a VERY common problem among us men! Pride typically gets in the way and will cause us to do things in the gym or at home that our bodies are just not ready to do yet.

It is incredibly important to stick with doing exercises on your current fitness level, and progress to the next level ONLY when your body has become accustomed to the current level you are on.

3.) You're doing ineffective exercises such as excessive cardio and/or isolation exercises...

Tons of cardio is highly ineffective for getting in shape. The reason why is simple: Doing too much cardio will take a detour pass burning off fat to now burning off muscle tissue! Losing muscle tissue is never a good thing!

What I recommend instead of long boring cardio is to do high intensity short cardio instead. Examples of this type of exercise are sprints, interval training, body-weight circuit routines, and more. This type of aerobic workout burns fat, drops pounds, and MAINTAINS muscle!

Also, I highly recommend you avoid as much as possible doing isolation exercises (especially if you have a lot of weight/body fat to lose). Isolation exercises are workouts that target one specific muscle (biceps for example). What I recommend you do instead are compound exercises (such as bench presses, squats, dead lifts, and more). Compound exercises burn off a ton of calories, you'll build muscle quicker, you'll increase strength quicker, you'll increase core strength, and so much more.

Lose Weight, Despite Technology Overload

When you think of information overload, you may think of the constant link to technology. We are consistently connected these days. We have our smart phones now, so we can call or text, surf the net, utilize social media and stay connected. While I love being connected and fulfilling my dreams of being online to serve more people I do notice that it is another location to become confused about pretty much everything. There is just so much great marketing out there, how do you select what is right for you in any are of your life?

When I think of "Too Much Information" I also think about the beauty supply store. There are now countless shampoos and conditioners by many different brands. I catch myself reading all the bottles. Well MMM, this one can give me shiny hair, but wait, this one will save my color, ahhh but yet there is another to add volume to my limp locks. I want it all! Which one and which brand will actually work on my hair? Same goes for skin cream, right ladies? I mean, come on, which one is really going to fight the signs of aging and fill in those smooth lines and wrinkles?

That leads me to weight loss and proper nutrition. How does the average person know what to do anymore when they are bombarded with options everywhere all day, and if all this stuff is the end all, beat all, why are we still losing the weight, just to gain it all back or better yet just throwing in the towel and feeling like failures? I am going to tell you how to pick what will work for you right now! Are you ready? Here it is:

1. Do your research. Is this program cutting out certain food groups, asking you to cut calories dramatically, not promoting complementing proper nutrition with weight training and cardiovascular exercise, creating a mindset that you are on a diet and this way of living will end when the diet is over? Run and don't look back, this is yet another diet where you will lose some weight, just to gain it back and feel miserable about yourself.

2. Make the decision this will be your final attempt at taking the weight off, because you are sick and tired of the yo-yo dieting and feeling like a failure. Make a decision this is not a diet, this is your life! This is your children's life! Your life is consistently bringing positive or negative energy to those around you. When you are happy with yourself you will bring that energy to your family, friends and people you meet. Your life will change for the better once you decide this is your LIFE, not your DIET! You want to feel great for the long run.

3. Take baby steps. You have some mindsets and habits that are ingrained in your brain. These will take time to overcome. Treat yourself like you would your very best friend, love yourself and cheer yourself on. Remember, small actions deserve recognition. A string of small actions will eventually lead you to your big goal. You weren't doing physics in preschool! Heck, I got out of doing it in college. Anyhow, you get the picture. Sustained weight loss will be a journey.

4. Seek support if you need it. Get an accountability partner or put together a group. Remember I am always here to help too!

Protein Can Help You Win The Battle Against Belly Fat

A balanced diet is an essential part of your journey to lose belly fat. If you are having trouble dropping belly fat, not eating enough protein could be the underlying reason. Protein makes the body build muscle and adequate muscle mass helps enhance your metabolism for fat loss.

Having 20 to 30% calories come from lean, low-fat protein sources is adequate for most people. One of the easiest ways to get plenty of Leucine, and no added fat, is to choose high quality whey protein. The most authentic processes used in producing these proteins use a technology that leaves all the protein molecules intact. In this process, lactose, cholesterol and saturated fats are removed. This process renders a food rich in Leucine and therefore excellent for metabolic enhancement and weight management. To lose belly fat you need to be proactive in what you eat.

Why You Should Be Counting Calories to Lose Weight

We all know losing weight isn't easy... but when you've got diabetes, it is so important in terms of managing your condition and reducing your risk for heart disease. Research out of New Zealand suggests it doesn't matter what diet plan you choose - high protein or high carb - counting calories to lose weight is the best way, as the weight loss comes from a reduction in calories, not the eating plan you decide to use. So you can choose the plan that's most appealing to you and still get results.

To look at the different diet plans and their impact on diabetes, the researchers kept track of almost 300 overweight diabetic subjects (men and women) who were age 35 to 75 years old. They were taking part in a brand new nutritional program scheduled to last two years.

At the start, all the subjects had BMI measurements over 27 (overweight is 25.0 to 29.9). They were randomly assigned to follow one of two diets - low fat and high protein eating plan, or a low in fat and high carb eating plan.

Weight and waist size was recorded at three points during the study; at 6 months, 1 year and 2 years. Other test including Kidney functionality and lipid profiles were also conducted regularly during the research.

The food diaries the participants kept showed that the total calorie intake decreased for both groups of dieters. They both ended up losing a similar number of pounds, and brought their waist size down as well. After two years, both groups even had similar lipid profiles.

Researchers conclude that both diet approaches yield weight loss, with the most important driving factor behind keeping the weight off being reducing daily calories, rather than regular consumption of either high protein or high carb plans. In the end, the two diets are pretty much equal.

These findings echo earlier work in on weight loss.

It's now generally agreed by nutritionists it doesn't matter what you hear about the latest "miracle" plan, calories are the key to weight loss. Not to mention keeping the weight off. No matter what source they come from, to lose weight you need to take in fewer of them than you burn off. It's just that simple.

To lose a single pound, you need to burn 3,500 calories more than you take in. Cut 500 calories a day from your diet and you'll drop a pound at the end of 7 days. Here are some simple, painless (really) tips you might use for cutting calories...

- Say "No" to one high calorie food each day - your morning sugary coffee drink or a nighttime snack like chips or ice cream. Look at what you eat and see what you might do without; you'll be surprised how quickly those calories add up.

- Choosing lower calorie alternatives to high calorie foods is a great way to treat your taste buds without sabotaging your calorie cutting efforts. The taste of today's low cal options is surprisingly good. You might even like them better - switch whole milk for fat free, water or diet soda for blended drinks, and snack on fresh fruit or veggies rather than salty snacks.

- Eating smaller portions really controls your calorie intake. Try taking just a bit less than what you think you can eat (you can have seconds, after all) and see if this is enough to satisfy. Look at portion sizes on labels; often junk foods are packaged in bags that are two servings, not one.

Are Boot Camps Good for Weight Loss?

Are boot camps for weight loss a good idea? The answer to this depends on several things. Firstly how good is the boot camp that you want to attend? This can vary greatly between classes. Firstly ask to see results of their success stories- can they produce any before and after photos of current clients? Ask what qualifications and experience the instructors have and what kind of insurance do they own. The boot camp is only as good as its instructor so this is key- ideally it should be taught by a fully qualified personal trainer- this way you can be sure you are getting the best instruction available.

For weight loss you must have sound nutritional principles or weight loss is nearly impossible. I've known in my time as a personal trainer many fat fit people who can run rings around they're skinny companions. Of course exercise when combined with dieting can produce miraculous results giving your body the reason to hold onto muscle and shed fat but it must be combined with a sound diet. In our boot camp each trainee is given a staged 6-week fat loss diet to work from and many clients experience losses of up to 20 pounds in this time. So make sure your boot camp provides you with a tailored diet.

Secondly look at its location. Is it in an area that you will easily be able to get to on time? Being late is not an option and you don't want to be demotivated by considering a long drive to the location or it won't work.

Thirdly you have to look at yourself. Are you at a stage where you're ready to make the commitment to change? Look again I mean are you really ready? Are you willing to make sacrifices with your time, money, energy and effort to bring about the desired changes- if you are that's fantastic and you'll get the results you want, if your wavering then maybe its not for you? Training requires commitment, boot camp or no boot camp. A class such as this can provide excellent motivation, peer support and a cheap way of training but you have to be ready to change your lifestyle and habits to make it happen.

The best way of doing this is identifying your motivations for change. This can be 'I want to feel healthier' 'I want to have more energy day to day' 'I want to live longer' 'I want to look great for my wedding', what ever your motivators write them all down and keep them visible somewhere you can see as a constant reminder why you are making the changes in your lifestyle. After a few months of training you may find one of your motivators is simply that you enjoy it! This is a great one and by now you've really started to change your psychology not only concerning exercise but your life.

How to Get Rid of Stomach Fat

When we are trying to get rid of stomach fat, it is important to establish which is the right and wrong ways to do it. One of the wrong ways to approach this issue is to starve ourselves. We may think that doing this makes sense after all if we stop eating, we will be sure to lose weight not only from our stomach, but also from the rest of our body.

The disadvantages of this approach are that it always creates more challenges than it solves. By starving ourselves initially we may shed a few pounds, and our stomach may even seem to shrink and appear flatter. However the act of drastically reducing our calorie intake sends strong signals to our body that it is in danger of starvation. - Drink plenty of water

Water retention is a common problem, particularly in the abdominal area and one of the main causes of water retention is dehydration. When we drink plenty of water each day, our body automatically releases any additional water it was storing. Another added advantage of being fully hydrated is that our liver can metabolize fat much easier and efficiently. By merely drinking plenty of water each day, our stomach will appear flatter and slimmer even if we have not made any other changes.

- Increase fibre intake

Fibre has many beneficial effects on our digestive system. It helps to keep us feeling full and satisfied, while also helping to remove waste products from our body more efficiently. Constipation makes us feel uncomfortable, bloated and sluggish, which can make our stomach look swollen and fat. How to Lose Weight on a Low-Carb Diet

Perhaps you are one of those people who have tried a low-fat diet or other similar weight loss diets.

The one thing they all have in common, is that they make you hungry. It may be easy to stick to the diet in the beginning, but in several weeks or months hunger sets in and you finally give up and start eating whatever you want.

We've all been there, and it's not surprising.

The human body does try to resist chances in body fat levels, either by making us hungry or decreasing our activity levels.

I would like to tell you about a different approach, which involves eating a diet that is low in carbohydrates. This sort of diet has been shown in research studies to cause a spontaneous drop in appetite.

This automatically results in reduced caloric intake, and people lose weight automatically. In fact, when researchers are comparing low-fat and low-carb diets, they need to actively restrict calories in the low-fat group to make the results comparable.

The low-carb dieters can eat anything they want, but they still lose the same amount or even more weight than the low-fat group.

The explanation for this is insulin.

When eating a diet that is high in carbohydrates, insulin levels are elevated. This is because carbohydrate is the macronutrient that causes the greatest amount of insulin release. A diet that is low in carbohydrates, is low in insulin.

Insulin controls blood sugar levels in the blood, but it also effectively functions as a gatekeeper to fat cells. High insulin levels mean that blood sugar has an easy time getting in to cells, but at the same time fat has a hard time getting out.

When eating a high-carb diet with elevated insulin levels, the fat is basically locked inside the fat cells, and the body is unable to use its own body fat for energy.

This results in the brain thinking that it is starving, and it responds by increasing hunger.

If you don't mind being hungry, and you have enormous self-discipline, then a low-fat diet might actually work for weight loss.

However, if you don't like being hungry and would prefer to lose weight automatically, then I recommend that you try a low-carbohydrate diet. It has been consistently shown in scientific studies to be the most effective approach for weight loss, without calorie restriction.

Reducing carbohydrates to about 100-150 grams per day should be sufficient. If that doesn't work, then going under a hundred grams should do the trick.

Nutrition is something that most people don't know much about, but they have heard of it. It is important, when trying to start a weight-loss diet, that you have simple principles to follow. In your research, you must look for what foods cannot be absent from your diet. Like I said before, yogurt should be a very important part in your weight-loss plan. Also, you need to point out from the begin what foods or beverages you need to eliminate from your daily consumption. Maybe you can't give up on all at once, but decreasing the quantity steadily over time will help a lot.

First, you need to make sure that the author of the diet is a professional nutritionist. Following the advice of a fraud could cause problems. Secondly, make sure that they do not advertise "miraculous" weight-loss in just a couple of days. That is probably a sure sign that the diet is a hoax. Finally, if there is any possibility for some personal guidance from the creators of the diet (possible through the internet), then that is a definite plus.

Socializing On The HCG Diet

Socializing when you're taking HCG diet drops and following the diet protocol can be difficult. In fact, many people claim going out with friends is the activity most likely to cancel out any HCG diet benefits and throw the diet out the window. But HCG weight loss shouldn't mean a miserable few weeks on your own. How can you enjoy socializing with friends and family without screwing up your diet?

Don't avoid all social occasions because you fear you'll slip up. Becoming a social outcast will make you feel bad about your diet. The worse you feel, the more likely you are to break the diet with unsuitable comfort food. You shouldn't skip social occasions altogether but you do need to be careful. When barbeques and bar food, cocktails and Chinese takeout are involved, it can be very difficult to resist temptation.

Try to pace yourself on days out - include regular rest breaks and pack fruit and vegetables from your diet allowance so you don't get over-hungry. If you go to non-food places where food is served (like the movie theatre), bring your own snacks like diced apple or frozen strawberries and walk straight past the concessions stand.

You're going to have to face temptation at some point in your diet. You need to ask yourself if that bowl of chips is worth sabotaging your diet for. Remember a diet isn't forever! You don't need to stop socializing but you do need to be strong and you'll be down to your ideal weight in no time.

Are You Guessing In Your Weight Loss Plan?

It's hours after completing my last seminar. Over my career I have spoken over two hundred times, in front of audiences both large and small, corporations, municipalities, college campuses and hospitals. It is common during my presentation to ask this question. What is the only aisle in the grocery store, where the food comes with any instructions? I remind you, I have asked this question over two hundred times to thousands of listeners, and still to this day, no one has answered correctly. How could the answer elude us for such a long time? So when I posed the question today, I was not surprised in what I heard.

Let me ask you the reader, what isle am I talking about? If you answered the pet food isle, you are probably one of my clients. No one else seems to know it, but more importantly no one seems to care. There could no better example to explain the sad state of the weight loss industry.

I come back to my office and one of the commercials from one of the so-called icons in the weight loss business is basting away. Maybe I should not mention their name, no better yet let me shout their name, "NUTRI-SYSTEMS", is saying no measuring, no counting, no check-ins. All the variable which lead to long term success, and their advertising it like its their advantage over everyone else. There are no one-size fits all approach to solve our countries weight problem.

Let me share with you this story. I have spent a career teaching, to lose fat, without losing muscle or reducing metabolism, you must control your hormonal response to the amount and quality of the foods you eat. This is easily done by being fitted to the foods based on your percent of body fat and activity level. You can even customize it to only the foods you like and those, which make sense to create a lifestyle around. To lose the weight as fat and keep it off, it must become your lifestyle. So in a counseling session I had several years ago, a potential client said to me, "I like what you have to say, it all make sense scientifically and I like your holistic approach but." WE have all heard it, sounds like the answer I need but. I have heard but so many times, so what was her but? I could never weigh or measure food.

Now those of you who know me, know I'm not settling for her but, which you guessed it was causing her to have a "big BUTT." So I started to redirect her, to why she needed to lose weight in the first place, when what seemed like a miracle happened. She noticed pictures of my two dogs, Cyrus and Shiloh on my desk. She asked, "Are those your dogs?" They look amazing. After thanking her, she commented she also had a dog. I asked, "how old and what breed? She said, "he is German Shepard and five years old." Now here's where the miracle begins. I said, "How much do you feed him? She replied, "two cups in the morning and two cups in the evening." I quickly responded, "do you ever give him one cup, or feed him once per day?" She said, "no never, the instructions tell me how much, and how often." Then she became real quite and the epiphany took place. She realized she was willing to do something for her dog, she ignored for herself. The best part was when I asked her, "What shape was her dog?." Her response, change her life, she said, "He is in great shape."

Keep Moving Forward For Weight Loss

I have a simple philosophy about life. God put my eyes in the front of my head, and He pointed my feet forward, because He intends for me to move forward. The windshield of our cars is large and the rear view mirror small. Why? We are meant to go forward, and keep from going back. There could be no getter example than managing our health and lifestyle.

Last week I wrote an article, "Better to Prepare than to Repair". I felt very moved and spiritually lead to do so. It was a few days later, when a former client called wanting to meet. He sounded desperate. His identity is not important, because I meet so many, too many this way. He had just left his doctors office, and had received bad news. His total cholesterol was over 300 mg/dl, triglycerides over 500 mg/dl, and his fasting glucose over 300 mg/dl, and was being told he was now diabetic...

It had been since 2008, since I had worked with him, and I asked him to bring in his blood lab results. I meant his current results, but to my surprise, he brought the one from 2008, the year I had worked with him as well. He had not had his blood tested since 2008, because after our work together all his levels were in the normal range. He had reach his weight and body composition goal, and from a blood chemistry point of view, in perfect health...

What happened, what went wrong, how could he leave the narrow path of good health and lean body, to a wide road of overweight body and poor health? The answer is simple. He stopped preparing and was now in need of repair. As I commented earlier, this happens far too often.

When our appointment was over, and I had redirected him back onto the narrow path, a word rose up in my spirit. It is a very special word for me, and one I hope you the reader have an ear to hear. Why is it so special to me? It was the first word, I heard in the ear of my spirit, from the heart of our God. It would change my life, and has given me great purpose in helping the thousands in need of help...

So what did God say? These words are not recorded anywhere, for they were written on my heart, and are the spoken word of God. Those who know what I'm saying know them as Rhema words. Ready, so what did God say, "Now is a time of preparation, soon you will enter into this land, I have promised. I am burning up in you, everything not of me. Do not return to places, I have set you free from. As I draw you near to Me, the path of righteousness narrows, but do not be afraid for it is I who set you free"

I still tremble when I think of this experience, and it happened over thirteen years ago. So what does this mean? God is saying prepare my people, so I don't have to repair them. My people, are destroyed for a lack of knowledge, teach them what to do. Keep them from going back to their old un-healthy lifestyles. Build their faith and trust in Me, for I will complete in them, that which I began

The term "freshman fifteen" is applied to the notion that first year college students often gain as much as 15 pounds of weight during their first year. Research studies have been in disagreement as to whether this is true or whether it is an "urban rumor".

While some study findings report that while the weight of some incoming students is the same by the end of their freshman year, others conclude that the freshman year "may" lead to weight and fat gain. Well, duh-uh!

Let's make two assumptions and reach our own conclusion:

1. You are a freshman college student.

2. You eat more food than you require for the healthy maintenance of your body.

Conclusion: You will gain weight.

There! We've done our own research study and have come to a valid and sure conclusion. The key as to whether or not you gain weight is dependent upon one factor...the number of calories you consume, and the number of calories your body uses.

Let's say you want to avoid weight gain. Here's what you do:

- Ask your doctor or the school nurse how many calories you should eat per day to maintain your health and weight.

How To Diet: Show How You Love Your Child

Our children, and their happiness and health, are typically very high in priority in our lives. We make the best choices in their behalf that we can. We think about how to approach the cost of the education, we take out life insurance for ourselves...just in case.

But it seems that when it comes to the principles of good nutrition, they're thrown under the bus right along with us. Why is that?

For the most part, the problem is that we don't know basic nutrition any better than they do. We can't teach what we don't know. So,they end up learning by example...our example, which is not always good.

So, what is a nutritional approach to weight management that we can institute for ourselves...and teach to our children? (Caveat: If you or your child is ill, always seek guidance from your doctor).

Let's look at some basics:

- Be up-front about the problem and the need to fix it. Explain to your children that faulty ways of eating have compromised all of your health and that life-long weight management is not an unreachable goal.

- Set the example for your family by modifying eating habits for yourself and for them. In other words, set your family on a new course.

- Reduce portion sizes! Statistics show that we are eating two, or even three, times the amount of food we should be eating.

- Lest you precipitate a riot, start by reducing serving sizes by a tablespoon (or more. for the heartier among you).

- Cut out all sugar-sweetened beverages. They are "empty calories"; that is, devoid of any nutritional value.

- Get rid of sugar-sweetened sodas, iced teas, punches, "health" drinks, coffees. (If they're not there, your kids can't drink them). We don't need extra sugar in our lives.

- Speaking of sugar... begin to read package labels. Avoid (or minimize) items that include sugar, especially as one of the first ingredients. (Some of the common sugars include: corn syrup, honey, lactose, fructose, cane sugar, molasses, malt syrup, dextran, dextrose.)

- And, speaking of labels, watch the fat. Multiply the total calories listed on the label by 25% (that would be 0.25). The answer will tell you the maximum amount of calories that should come from fat. (It will give a number which identifies "calories from fat").

- Check the label for serving size. The amount of calories listed are for what the manufacturer is calling a serving size. Don't assume the packaged cookie, if intended for one person, is indeed only 100 calories.

- Provide readily-available healthful snacks. Seldom do we, or our children, eat because we are legitimately hungry. We eat because "it's time to eat" or because we are accustomed to eating all the time.

- Have chunks of fruits and vegetables cleaned and ready to eat. If it's in front of them...they'll eat it (especially when they see there is no junk food anywhere to be found).

Let's teach our children to eat correctly.
