Keep Your New Year's Resolution to Lose Weight

Every January many people make a resolution to lose weight. However, most find they can't keep their resolution for more than a few days or weeks. Why?

Here are some easy tips to help you lose weight and keep it off. Start a journal now to answer these questions--and to reinforce your commitment to losing weight. As always, consult with your doctor before you begin any diet or exercise program.

1. Do you really want this or is this only something you feel you 'should' do? It might be obvious, but unless this is something you really want, you won't be able to make a strong commitment to it. If it's only a 'should', then it's much weaker. Even if the objective is a doctor-recommended 'should' of losing weight, you will need to 'up the ante' and find reasons you personally want to do it.

2. If this is something you really want (or a 'should' you want to convert into a want), it helps to write down what you think you'll get out of having it. For instance, what will you get out of being slimmer? A new wardrobe? A feeling of heightened self-esteem? The ability to play more with your children or grandchildren? Admiring glances from friends and strangers? Write down all of it.

3. Take the time to imagine and daydream in detail about what it feels like to be your perfect weight. Imagine putting on your new smaller-sized wardrobe and admiring the way it fits in the mirror. Imagine coming down to breakfast and choosing to eat healthy, delicious food in healthy proportions. Imagine being able to run to catch a bus or taxi without being out of breath or your joints hurting. Imagine the admiring looks and congratulations from friends and co-workers. Imagine getting dressed up for a formal or fun event with friends in styles you haven't been able to wear before now.

4. Cut out pictures of clothes you will wear, activities you will do and places you want to visit in your new (!) bathing suit after you've lost the weight. Put them on the refrigerator to inspire you!

5. Join or form a group of people who have similar goals. Studies show people are more successful when they join others who share the same goals. Check out http://www.weightloss.meetup.com/ to find weight loss groups in your area.

6. Be gentle with yourself. Some slip-ups are normal. Losing weight and keeping it off is a lifetime commitment. It's achieved one day at a time.
