If one is already fat or obese to begin with, then one should reduce portions to half or even a third of what one usually eats. The quality of food matters too. One should stop eating or drinking food with empty sugars. These include food items such as candy or soda. Fruits and vegetables should replace processed and greasy food items. In a couple of months, this change alone will guarantee that one lose a few of inches in the stomach region.

Exercise is also essential in getting rid of belly fat. Exercise burns up calories and they also build up muscles. Cardio exercises are very effective in getting rid of belly fat. Individuals must do 30 minutes to an hour of cardio exercises several times a week. Strength training exercises should also be included in the overall exercise routine since increased muscles mass will increase one's metabolic rate. An increased metabolic rate will burn fat even during rest periods. One of the best exercises for getting rid of belly fat is the planking workout. This is done by going down on the pushup position but instead of using the hands, the individual uses the forearms to support the body. The exercise commences with the individual tightening the abs and holding it for sets of 20, 30, 60 or maybe even 120 seconds.
